Stanley Mitchell Hut is a rustic log cabin at the edge of a meadow in Yoho’s Little Yoho Valley, used as a base for hikes, scrambles and mountaineering. You reach it on foot from the Takakkaw Falls parking area, so this is an overnight backcountry trip, not a quick roadside stop. Reserve ahead. For a photo, step back across the meadow and frame the cabin with the glacier and peaks beyond it.

The common summer plan is to climb up Little Yoho Valley, then descend the Iceline Trail. That saves the Iceline’s steep initial climb for the descent and keeps the glacier scenery ahead of you. The Iceline route finishes about a kilometre from the car, so leave energy for the walk back. Use the current park trail guidance to plan the exact route and distance.

The hut sleeps up to 22 and has mattresses, wood heat, propane lighting, a stove and oven, and an outhouse. The creek is its listed water source, so bring a way to treat water. It’s self-catering: pack your meals rather than expecting a café or restaurant.

Stanley Mitchell helped found the Alpine Club of Canada in 1906 and served as its secretary-treasurer from 1907 to 1930. The hut was completed in 1940, the year he died. The cabin was designated a Federal Heritage Building in 1997. It also connects to a larger mountaineering story: Canadian military mountaineering training took place in the valley in 1943, and Hans Gmoser later based his ski-touring operation here.

The hut is open year-round, but the Takakkaw Falls road closes for winter and adds about 13 kilometres to the approach from the highway. Reaching the hut then is a long ski approach, not a winter version of the summer hike. Winter trails aren’t maintained, and the route crosses avalanche terrain, so plan it as serious backcountry travel.
