Trail guide
A closed loop of 370.5 metres (0.23 miles), starting and ending at the site access on Hoffmann Kiln Road near Langcliffe. Other mapping of the same signed Southern Loop puts it at around 372 metres. This is a stop of a few minutes' walking, not a countryside hike, and the interest is concentrated rather than spread out.
The walk threads through the former Langcliffe Quarry and Craven Lime Works. Highlights are the Hoffmann kiln, the triple-draw kilns, the remains of the Spencer kiln, and surrounding quarry workings, with interpretation on site and short woodland sections between structures. For anyone interested in industrial history or in photographing limestone masonry and kiln architecture, the density of surviving structure is the reason to come.
The route follows footways with a short section of service road and two mapped flights of steps. Expect uneven ground around historic structures, where surfaces are old and edges can be irregular. It is not a fully accessible route, so plan around the steps if that matters to you.
Use the signed site car park and access on Hoffmann Kiln Road, reached from the B6479 by the lane that passes beneath the Settle to Carlisle railway bridge, then the signed turn to the car park. The site listing shows a car park and no other facilities, so bring your own water and sort out food, drinks and comfort stops in Settle or Langcliffe before you arrive.
Dogs are welcome on the public route under control. Keep them on a lead where signs ask for it and around any grazing animals.
Because the loop is so short, most people combine it with something longer. The separate Stainforth Force and Hoffman Kiln village walk of about four miles covers the wider Stainforth and Langcliffe area and is a different route with its own start point, so treat it as a companion outing rather than an extension of this loop.
