Wainui Bay Coast Track Entrance“Wainui Bay's Coast Track entrance is coming up. The walk to Whariwharangi Bay takes about four hours return, with a climb over a saddle each way, so save it for a proper half-day outing.”

Trail guide
Wainui to Separation Point / Te Matau is an 18 km (11.05 mi) out-and-back from Wainui Bay Car Park to Abel Tasman’s northern headland. The point is about 9 km one way; allow around five hours for the return. It is a moderate but long coastal hike, with forested climbs and a rocky final headland. Go for the northern coast walk and the view across two bays, not a quick beach stop.
From the car park, the track climbs to a saddle overlooking Wainui Inlet, then descends beside a small stream toward Whariwharangi Bay. Whariwharangi Hut sits just behind the beach; it is a restored former farm homestead, with a campsite nearby. If the full walk is too much, make the hut your turnaround: this section is 5.7 km one way, or about 11.4 km (7.1 mi) return from Wainui.
From Whariwharangi, climb out of the bay over another saddle and descend toward Mutton Cove. At the cove, take the track from the beach and follow the ridge toward Separation Point. The walk ends on a rocky headland. Stop at the official track end: the rough descent beyond it is not part of this walk. The return retraces the same route, so save some energy for the hills on the way back.
Separation Point / Te Matau marks the boundary between Golden Bay and Tasman Bay. On a clear day, look across Golden Bay toward Farewell Spit and across Tasman Bay toward D’Urville Island. Native seabirds and seals use the point. Seals haul out on the rocks below; keep at least 20 m away when they are on land. For a photo, frame the scrub-covered headland against the water from the track end instead of scrambling lower.
Start at Wainui Bay Car Park at the end of McShane Road. Toilets are available at the car park and at Whariwharangi Hut. Carry food and water for the day; treat water from huts or campsites unless it is specifically marked as filtered. Dogs are not allowed in Abel Tasman National Park. If staying overnight, book a Great Walk hut or campsite in advance; bookings are required year-round.
