Trail guide
Norumbega Mountain Trail (Trail 60) is a 1.3-mile, one-way descent from the ridge junction with Goat Trail to Lower Hadlock Pond. The path eases down through forest, with a few openings toward Somes Sound. This is the gentler southern leg of the Norumbega outing, not the steep climb from the road. Allow about 45–60 minutes for this leg itself; that excludes the climb to its start and the return.
Trail 60 does not begin at the roadside pull-off. From Norumbega Mountain Parking Area, follow Goat Trail uphill to the ridge junction, then take this trail down to the pond. The full outing closes through the pond-side trail and Norumbega Connector for 3.2 miles round trip; allow about 2–3 hours for that loop. If you only want Trail 60, plan how you will reach its ridge start and leave its pond-side end.
The descent stays mostly in wooded terrain, including a grove of young pines, and reaches the shore of Lower Hadlock Pond. If you continue around the full loop, the pond-side trail has rooted stretches and boardwalk over boggy ground. A small waterfall can appear in wet weather where water flows from Upper Hadlock into Lower Hadlock. Lower Hadlock is a public water supply, so swimming is not allowed.
