Wasseralm

Wasseralm is a small German Alpine Club hut at 1,423 m in a high basin between the Hagen Mountains and Steinernes Meer. It is a useful overnight stop on the Große Reibn, the demanding hut-to-hut route around Königssee. Come for a night deep in the mountains; if you want a quick lakeside detour, the climb is the whole commitment.

Sleeping is in shared mattress dorms. The hut is staffed from late May to early October, with a winter room open year-round. Beds are limited, so arrange your stay directly with the hut before setting out. It is a basic mountain hut rather than a dependable restaurant stop; check food availability ahead of time. Washrooms and toilets are available, but facilities are simple. Dogs cannot stay overnight.

The shortest approach starts at Obersee and climbs by Röthsteig or Landtalsteig. This is a real mountain hike, not a road-access stop. A longer route from Gotzenalm follows Landtal and has exposed sections, so check the route against your experience and comfort with heights before choosing it.

The hut sits between the Hagen Mountains and Steinernes Meer, below Teufelshörner and Funtenseetauern. On the Landtal approach, you get views toward Röthbach Waterfall as it drops in stages down the 700 m Röthwand. Its total drop is 479 m.

A Kaser here was rebuilt in 1950 from remains of Hermann Göring’s hunting lodge. Overnight accommodation dates to 1951; grazing ended in 1956. It is a striking bit of history in a place best known now as a mountain refuge.
