Overview
Röthbach Waterfall thunders down the Röthwand at the head of the Obersee valley, a dramatic 470‑meter drop framed by sheer limestone walls. The approach is half the magic: an electric‑boat ride down Königssee, a quick stroll to Obersee’s famous boathouse, then a lakeside path that funnels you into a glacial amphitheater with the falls as the backdrop.
Getting There
Start at Schönau am Königssee. Take the electric boat to Salet (the final stop); in winter, service may run only as far as St. Bartholomä, so plan accordingly. Boats are frequent in summer but lines can build—arrive early and know the time of your last return boat.
The Hike
From Salet dock it’s about 15 minutes to Obersee. Skirt the shoreline, pass Fischunkelalm, then continue up‑valley to the base of the falls. Expect roughly 8–9 km round trip from Salet and easy‑to‑moderate walking with a few short steeper or rocky sections. After storms, upper paths can be impassable, but the valley‑floor view is still superb.
Amenities and Food
You’ll find public restrooms at Salet by the dock. Seasonal huts—Saletalm near the start and Fischunkelalm deeper along the route—serve simple food and drinks when operating. There are no facilities at the waterfall itself. The National Park notes that toilets are found only in huts and restaurants; there are no standalone trail facilities.
Best Time to Visit
Early summer brings the most water thanks to snowmelt. Go on the first boats for mirror‑still reflections on Obersee and fewer people. Shoulder and winter seasons mean reduced boat service; always plan around the last return.
Photography and Wildlife
Bring a wide lens for the amphitheater scenery and a longer focal length for compressing the falls against the valley. Sit on the lake side of the boat to spot other cascades on Königssee en route. Along the trail, you may see grazing cattle, occasional mountain goats, and raptors overhead—give wildlife space and follow park rules.
Need‑to‑Know
Sections near the far end can be wet and slick—wear sturdy, grippy footwear. You generally can’t get right to the base; the slope below the falls is very steep. Boats, huts, and some paths are highly seasonal; check conditions the day before you go.
