Röthbach Waterfall

Take the passenger boat across Königssee to Salet, then walk inland. Salet service is seasonal, roughly from late April to mid-October, and the return schedule matters: check that day's sailings before setting out and leave enough time to get back. There is no road around the lake, and fog, storms or high water can delay or suspend boats. The crossing is part of the day, with the steep lake walls, St. Bartholomä and the famous echo along the way.

From Salet, Obersee is about a 15-minute walk. The route continues along the lake past Fischunkelalm, then climbs over rougher, uneven ground toward the open meadow beneath the falls. The last stretch is steeper and can be slippery, so this is a poor fit if you want an easy lakeside stroll. Wear shoes with grip and give the walk more time than the first short approach to Obersee suggests.

The falls spill down the Röthwand in two main stages. The wall separates the Königssee and Obersee basins from the higher Röth plateau between Steinernes Meer and Hagengebirge. This is Northern Limestone Alps country: much of the rock began as marine deposits on the ancient Tethys seafloor, then was folded and lifted as Africa moved north toward Europe.

Fischunkelalm sits beside Obersee on the way to the waterfall. It is a seasonal alpine pasture and hut; cattle reach it by boat because no road runs around the lake. Saletalm has a mountain restaurant by the southern boat landing, a separate stop before or after the walk. Treat either food stop as seasonal and check what is operating on your visit.

The meadow below the cliff is the useful viewing area, and it gives the waterfall its scale. For a photo, include the open grass and treeline below the falls rather than zooming in until the surrounding wall disappears. You can't safely get close to the base, and a closer angle isn't worth leaving the established approach.

In dry summer weather, the waterfall can shrink to a thin stream or nearly disappear. The steep wall, open meadow and long view through the valley still make the walk worthwhile, but go for the whole Obersee outing rather than the promise of a powerful cascade.
