Reserve a bed before setting out, and bring a hut sleeping bag; blankets and pillows are supplied. The hut has 90 mattress-dorm beds and 19 room beds, plus an eight-bed winter room. The dining room and sun terrace serve regional food during the staffed season. Guest showers are only for overnight guests and depend on available water. The staffed season generally runs from June into October, with exact dates changing year to year.

From the hut, the marked climb to Großer Hundstod (2,594 m) takes about two hours and gains 475 m via Hundstodscharte and the south ridge. The DAV also lists a 45-minute route to Kleiner Hundstod, with a view toward the Dießbach reservoir. Hut-to-hut routes lead to Kärlingerhaus in about three hours and Riemannhaus in three to three-and-a-half, making this a natural overnight link across the range.

Built between 1927 and 1929, the hut is operated by the DAV's Ingolstadt section. Its sun terrace looks over a broad rocky high plateau and surrounding peaks. It is especially good to be outside around sunrise or sunset, when the mountain views are at their best.
