Wimbachgrieshütte

Wimbachgrieshütte is a seasonal alpine hut and self-service restaurant at 1,327 m in the Wimbachtal. It is a rewarding goal for a full mountain walk, not an easy stop from the road: the round trip from Wimbachbrücke is 17 km, takes about 5½ hours, and climbs roughly 699 m. Expect a steady climb for much of the way and keep enough daylight for the return.

Start at the Wimbachbrücke bus stop or parking area in Ramsau. On the way in, you can pay to walk through Wimbachklamm gorge, or take the short, steep bypass above it; the gorge is not part of the return route. The trail continues past Wimbachschloss, once a hunting lodge for Bavarian kings, then follows a gradual incline for about 4 km more to the hut. This is a long approach, but much of it is broad valley walking rather than a technical climb.

The Wimbachtal opens into the Wimbachgries, a wide sweep of pale scree beneath steep mountain walls. Around 1,100 m, the trail crosses a rock flow that can be up to 300 m wide. It comes from dolomite weathering on the Watzmann and Hochkalter: snowmelt and heavy rain carry broken rock down the valley, while pioneer plants take hold at the edges until the next movement reshapes them.

At 1,327 m, the hut sits in the national park’s core zone with the Watzmann massif, Palfelhörner and Hochkalter around it. The self-service kitchen serves regional food; cakes and Knödel are particular visitor favorites. There are shared rooms and dormitory places for overnight stays, and you need to bring a hut sleeping bag. Take cash: the hut says it does not accept payment cards. Its usual season runs from mid-May to mid-October, depending on weather, so check current status before planning around a meal or overnight stay. Dogs must be leashed in the park; the hut allows them outside, but not inside or overnight.

The hut was first mentioned as Griesalm and was worked by local farmers. NaturFreunde Munich took ownership in 1919 and expanded it as a restaurant and mountaineers’ accommodation. That long hut tradition is still part of the visit: the building is a destination in its own right, but it is also a useful stopping point deep in the valley.
