Overview

About Viehkogel from Kärlingerhaus

Why go

  • A clear summit goal with a broad Funtensee and Steinernes Meer panorama
  • A rewarding half-day outing from a remote hut base

Heads up

  • The final slope is steep, loose scree
  • Reaching the hut adds a long, strenuous approach from the valley
Viehkogel is a 2,158-m summit above Funtensee. From Kärlingerhaus, it is a 3.1-mile (5 km) out-and-back, with about 1,640 feet (500 m) of climbing. The hut guide gives 2.5 km one way and about two hours uphill; allow about four hours for the climb, return, and time at the top. Do it if you are already staying at the hut. Reaching the hut from the valley is a separate, much bigger hike.

From the hut, the marked path makes a broad arc across the open ground above the lake before climbing toward the summit. The final slope is steep, with loose scree that can shift underfoot. This is a medium mountain hike with a hard finish; take extra care on the descent and do not treat it as a winter route.

The summit looks across Funtensee and the limestone ridges of the Steinernes Meer. On a clear day, you can pick out Schönfeldspitze and Watzmann in the wider panorama. For a photo that shows where you are, include the Funtensee basin below the pale peaks rather than filling the frame with rock alone.

There is no road to Kärlingerhaus. From Königssee Seelände, take the boat to St. Bartholomä and hike about four hours via Saugasse, gaining roughly 1,100 m; the alternative from Salet via Sagerecksteig takes about five hours. Those are hut approaches, not part of the 3.1-mile summit outing. The hut has dining rooms and beds during its May-to-October season. Dogs must be leashed in the park, and the hut does not allow them to stay overnight.
