Kärlingerhaus is a seasonal alpine hut tucked deep in the park’s high country, just a few minutes from Funtensee. It’s simple and purpose-built for hikers: dorm bunks and a handful of private rooms, no TVs or AC, and bed linen available. Expect a country-style bar/restaurant, hearty meals, and a terrace that soaks up big-mountain views.

Facilities are practical rather than plush. There are restrooms and running water. Warm showers are offered for a fee when supply allows, but they can be switched off during shortages. You earn this hut. It’s only accessible by foot, commonly combined with routes from the Königssee side (via St. Bartholomä and the Saugasse) or longer crossings from Wimbachgries/Trischübel and neighboring plateaus. Terrain & Safety

The hut sits on the karstic Steinernes Meer, where surface water is scarce and the limestone underfoot is rough. In fog, plateaus can be confusing; in rain, limestone gets slick. Start early, carry enough water, use sturdy footwear (poles help on the endless limestone steps), and keep an eye on the forecast.

The kitchen turns out hot meals and a breakfast option; service winds down early. If you want dinner, plan to arrive before 20:00. Portions and pricing vary with supply runs—don’t expect town-restaurant norms at a foot-access hut.
