Berchtesgaden National Park, BY
A broad valley walk to a bridge over a 1999 rockfall scar.
Overview
Klausbachtal bis Hängebrücke is a 7.4 km (4.6 mile) out-and-back from Klausbachhaus to the suspension bridge and back. Allow about three hours. Most of the walk follows broad paths through the valley, so it is a good choice if you want a manageable outing with a clear destination, not a summit climb. The Park describes it as barrier free, but the last approach is steep, so check the grades below if you use a wheelchair or need to avoid steep ramps.

Trail guide
From the National Park information point at Hintersee, follow route 481 up the valley, past the golden-eagle observation point and Lahnwald service hut. Stay straight at the two junctions on the signed route. Most of the surface is firm path or gravel, with a short asphalt stretch near the start. The valley gains height gradually until the bridge approach, where the grade rises to 16–22%; the bridge ramps are about 18% at both ends. The Park recommends e-assist for wheelchair users. From the benches beyond the bridge, frame the span against the Mühlsturzhörner and the rocky Klausbach channel. The seasonal ALMErlebnisBUS stops at the bridge and can spare you the steep approach.
In September 1999, about 250,000 cubic metres of rock broke from Kleines Mühlsturzhorn and buried the former wooden bridge, road and parts of the path. The Klausbach cut a new channel through the debris, which is still visible around the crossing. The current 55 m suspension bridge opened in 2010 and hangs just over 11 m above the stream. Klausbachtal is also home to one of the Park’s four golden-eagle pairs; the observation point has information panels and loungers, but sightings are never guaranteed. At Klausbachhaus, there is a free exhibit about alpine pasture farming and an accessible toilet in an outbuilding.
