Hiking Halsalm-Rundweg

The loop above HinterseeHalsalm-Rundweg is a 6.

Halsalm-Rundweg is a 6.4 km loop from the National Park information point at Klausbachhaus, climbing to Halsalm and returning by trail 63 through Fernsebner. Allow about 3 to 3.5 hours and roughly 440 m of climbing. Choose it for a proper uphill half-day and a pasture lookout over Hintersee; it is not a flat lap of the lake. The route starts with about 350 m along paved Hirschbichlstraße before the signed right turn. After that, the climb is continuous, mostly on a broad gravel and forest track, until the route reaches the alpine pasture near 1,220 m.

Broad bends and switchbacks make the uphill section straightforward to follow, but they do not make it short. Pass the junction for Böslsteig, the more demanding route toward Reiter Alm, and stay on the Halsalm trail. The forest thins near Halsgrube. A bearded-vulture information stand and spotting scope operate seasonally when volunteers and weather allow; hours vary, and a bird sighting is never guaranteed. It is a worthwhile pause before the meadow rather than a reason to plan around a fixed schedule.

The pasture and its viewAt Halsalm the wide approach gives way to a narrower path across open alpine pasture.

At Halsalm the wide approach gives way to a narrower path across open alpine pasture. Slow down here: this is where the view opens over Hintersee and the Ramsau valley, with the steep cliffs of Reiter Alm rising behind the alp. At the Alm cross, frame the lake below the meadow and leave some of the valley in the picture; the foreground makes the height of the lookout easier to read than a tight shot of the lake alone.

A working alpine farmHalsalm is still managed by the Lacklehen farming family.

Halsalm is still managed by the Lacklehen farming family. Cattle are traditionally driven up in mid-to-late May and spend the summer on the pasture under the care of a Sennerin, an alpine herder. Alpine farming is part of Bavaria's intangible cultural heritage, and here it is still a working landscape rather than a staged exhibit. Cows may be out on the meadow in summer, but their presence changes with the season.

When the seasonal hut is operating, visitors can get simple local food and drink. Cheese, bread, milk or buttermilk are the specialties hikers repeatedly mention, and cake is sometimes available. Expect a small alpine hut selection, not a full restaurant menu, and check current service before counting on lunch here.

Eagles above the valleySeveral pairs of golden eagles nest in the cliffs around Halsalm, which is why Klausbach Valley…

Several pairs of golden eagles nest in the cliffs around Halsalm, which is why Klausbach Valley is known as the Valley of the Eagles. Keep an eye on the rock walls as you cross the pasture, but treat the nests as a reason to look, not a promise of a sighting. The spotting scope and interpretation stand at Halsgrube focus on bearded vultures, a different bird.

Closing the loopAfter the pasture, continue toward Ramsau on trail 63 to Fernsebner, then use the footpath…

After the pasture, continue toward Ramsau on trail 63 to Fernsebner, then use the footpath beside the road to return to Klausbachhaus. Other Halsalm itineraries descend directly toward Hintersee and return along the lakeshore; that is a different route, even when the name and mileage look similar. Follow the trail 63 and Fernsebner line for this loop. The Klausbachhaus information point has public toilets, and bus 846 serves Hintersee. Dogs are allowed in the National Park but must stay on leash.
