Cross Fissures Overlook is a small viewpoint on the South Rim, reached by an unpaved path off Rim Drive. The path to the overlook is listed at 357 yards; give the stop about 30 minutes for the walk and a good look around. I’d add it on an unrushed drive if you’re interested in how the canyon’s rock breaks into spires and deep cracks. With time for just one or two overlooks, Painted Wall delivers the bigger, more immediate payoff.

Read the cracksThe deep fissures split the cliff into separate rock masses.

The deep fissures split the cliff into separate rock masses. The pale bands are pegmatite dikes: mineral-rich intrusions of feldspar, quartz, and muscovite that forced their way into much older gneiss when the rock was deep underground. That close-up geology is what gives this stop a different feel from a quick pullout view.

The rock here had a long head start. The canyon’s metamorphic basement is about 1.8 billion years old. An uplift raised it around 60 million years ago; volcanoes later buried it under volcanic rock, and the Gunnison River began cutting down through that cover as early as 2 million years ago. The canyon you’re looking into is the result of that long sequence, still exposed in its steep walls.

Stay for another angleA second small overlook offers a different view across the canyon and its rough, broken cliffs.

A second small overlook offers a different view across the canyon and its rough, broken cliffs. In spring, look for woolly groundsel and other flowers in the brush along the walk. For a photo that feels like this stop, keep some of the rim rock in the foreground, then frame the fractures or pale bands against the spires beyond.
