Rock Point Overlook is a small cliffside viewpoint on the South Rim, reached by an unpaved 234-yard walk from the road. Keep it in your drive if you want a quick look across the Gunnison toward Long Draw; the trailhead parking is beside South Rim Road, roughly 2.6 miles west of the visitor center. The South Rim stays open year-round, though services are limited in winter and early spring.

The path winds through oak brush and opens onto a rocky point that projects toward the canyon. Face northwest: Long Draw cuts down the far wall across the river, framed between Devil's Lookout to the north and Big Island to the south. Echo Canyon drops below and to the right from this angle.

A weathered dead tree sits among the rocks in front of the dark canyon walls. Include it in the frame to give the distant cliffs a sense of scale; the river and far rim make a wide landscape view from the point.

Why the walls look blackThe canyon averages about 2,000 feet deep, and at The Narrows it is only 1,750 feet wide.

The canyon averages about 2,000 feet deep, and at The Narrows it is only 1,750 feet wide. Those dark walls expose ancient Precambrian rocks, including metamorphic and volcanic stone. The Gunnison was already following a course through softer rock before uplift and erosion cut that route into the much harder ancient rocks below.
