Cahills Lookout is a west-facing lookout reserve on Katoomba’s western edge, with four platforms across the Megalong Valley. It’s a good short stop if you want a different angle on the escarpment from the Three Sisters side: the view takes in Megalong Head, Boars Head Rock and Narrow Neck Peninsula. Sunset is the signature visit, but it’s also when the lookout gets busiest.

Keep the approach in mindA paved path of about 500 m runs from the Cliff Drive car park to the viewing platforms.

A paved path of about 500 m runs from the Cliff Drive car park to the viewing platforms. The main path has a 1:14 grade. The entrance picnic setting is accessible, but route information doesn’t establish step-free access to every viewpoint. The car park has six standard spaces, one accessible space and limited room for buses; parking is metered, and demand can exceed capacity at peak times. Picnic tables and benches near the entrance make it a handy place to pause with food. Check the meter for current rates.

Walk to the platform named for Boars Head within the central Cahills precinct for the best close view of Boars Head Rock. The separate Boars Head Lookout to the south is a different point in the reserve. From the western platforms, the rock and the long Narrow Neck ridge give you strong foreground and background layers for a sunset frame.

Cahills Lookout was built in 1959 and officially named that June by NSW Premier J.J. Cahill. Its original pergola, with rock-faced sandstone piers and concrete beams, gives the approach some postwar civic character. A November 2014 bushfire damaged reserve facilities; a 2015 upgrade repaired them and added another viewpoint towards Boars Head.

The upper slopes are on Narrabeen Group sandstone, with pagoda-like formations, while ephemeral creeks drain toward Megalong Creek and the Coxs River catchment. The reserve is on the Ngurra of Gundungurra and Dharug peoples; their continuous connection to this landscape is part of its story.
