Golden Stairs is a steep out-and-back from Golden Stairs car park on Narrow Neck to Federal Pass and back: 1.6 km return. It is a short way into Jamison Valley, but the track drops 200 m and the climb back is the real work. Allow about 1 to 1¼ hours; the return ascent alone takes around 45 minutes. The grade is very steep and difficult, with many steps, so keep energy for the climb and bring water and a snack. Federal Pass continues toward Ruined Castle, Mount Solitary and other valley walks, but those are longer trips beyond this route.

The formed, clearly signposted track drops through several cliff bands, with many steps and some obstacles. Views open toward Dogface Landslide, the Three Sisters, Jamison Valley and Mount Solitary. At a cliff opening, frame a bend in the stairs with the valley beyond to show the drop. At the bottom, the stairs meet Federal Pass; turn around there for the Golden Stairs return walk. Spring and summer can bring waratahs, mountain devils and pink boronias along the route. Around Federal Pass, look for lyrebirds, black cockatoos and rosellas; dragon lizards and snakes may also be seen in summer.
