Ruined Castle

Ruined Castle is a sandstone peak in Jamison Valley, known for its broken stack of rock blocks above the forest. It’s a long walk to a natural formation, not a built castle or a roadside ruin. I’d keep it for an experienced half-day walk if you want a proper valley hike and a summit scramble; for an easy viewpoint, choose another stop.

The standard route from Golden Stairs is 6.6 km return and about 4–5 hours. It drops steeply into Jamison Valley and climbs back up the same way. The track is Grade 4, very steep, and has many steps; at the end, you scramble and rock-hop over large boulders to get onto the formation. This is for experienced bushwalkers, not a casual lookout stop.

The route follows an old mining line through cuttings and embankments, then into coachwood and sassafras rainforest in the valley. That change from exposed cliff country to dense forest gives the approach its own character. Keep an ear out for lyrebirds among the rainforest sounds.

From the rock, the panorama opens across Jamison and Cedar Creek valleys, reaching toward Wentworth Falls and Katoomba. Mount Solitary rises across the valley. For a photo, include one of the sandstone blocks in the foreground and Mount Solitary behind it; the rock gives the valley view a sense of scale.

The formation sits beside the remains of a late-19th-century shale mine and remote village. A Bleichert ropeway once linked the mine with Katoomba; it collapsed in 1890. The settlement was abandoned after the mine closed in the early 20th century. The exact mine remains aren’t pinned to a visitor stop along the route, so treat the history as part of the valley rather than a promise of a visible ruin.

There’s no food service identified along the walk and no confirmed water refill point, so bring enough food and drinking water for a 4–5 hour outing. No toilet is listed at the summit; public toilets and picnic facilities are at Katoomba Falls picnic area, elsewhere in the park. Pets aren’t allowed in the national park except certified assistance animals.
