Ruined Castle campground is a small, remote campsite in Jamison Valley, just below the natural rock formation called Ruined Castle. It works best as an overnight stop for hikers who want the short climb from camp to the rock top and views across the valley toward Mount Solitary and Narrowneck Peninsula. The popular approach via Golden Stairs is about 4 km one way. It is very steep and stepped, so this suits experienced bushwalkers rather than a casual overnight outing. A longer approach starts near Scenic World and follows Federal Pass and Mount Solitary walking track.

There is a non-flush toilet but no water at camp. Carry enough water for the night and the walk out. Mobile reception is limited along the track, and NSW Parks offers free personal locator beacon hire at Blue Mountains Heritage Centre in Blackheath.

The walk passes remains of a late-19th-century shale-mining village: embankments, cuttings and ruined miners' cottages. The Bleichert Ropeway once linked the mine with the Katoomba end of the valley; it collapsed in 1890. Those traces add an unexpected human history to a demanding bushwalk.

Take the extra climbA short walk from camp reaches the top of Ruined Castle.

A short walk from camp reaches the top of Ruined Castle. The final section is a steep scramble with rock-hopping past large boulders. From the top, the view opens across Jamison Valley toward Mount Solitary and Narrowneck Peninsula. Ruined Castle is a natural rock formation, not a building.
