“You're approaching the Narrow Neck gate, the starting point for the walk to Castle Head. The unsealed approach can be boggy and potholed, and four-wheel drive is recommended.”

More about Castle Head Lookout

A walk-in headlandCastle Head is a rocky, unfenced viewpoint at the end of a spur off the Narrow Neck Plateau.

Castle Head is a rocky, unfenced viewpoint at the end of a spur off the Narrow Neck Plateau. Keep it for a close, wide look into the Jamison Valley; it takes a proper walk to get here, rather than a roadside pull-in.

Follow the spurFrom the locked gate on Glenraphael Drive, allow about 4.4 km return and one to two hours.

From the locked gate on Glenraphael Drive, allow about 4.4 km return and one to two hours. Follow the wide fire trail, then take the signed left turn onto a narrower bush track after roughly 800 m. It passes a broad rocky lookout platform and the trig station before reaching Castle Head itself. The final stretch is rough and rocky, with a short steeper section; it can be waterlogged after heavy rain.

The panorama links the Three Sisters on the left, Mount Solitary ahead, Ruined Castle in front of it, and Cox’s River farther to the right. For a photo, keep the sandstone ledge in the foreground to show how the headland hangs over the forested valley. The edge is unfenced and exposed, especially in high winds.

Ruined Castle is a separate landmarkThe Ruined Castle is the distinct rock formation below Mount Solitary, not the headland you’re…

The Ruined Castle is the distinct rock formation below Mount Solitary, not the headland you’re standing on. The longer valley route past it follows old mining works, with cuttings, embankments and the remains of miners’ cottages; those are on the valley walk, not this short lookout spur.

Getting to the walkThe usual start is at the final gate on Glenraphael Drive.

The usual start is at the final gate on Glenraphael Drive. The approach is unsealed and NSW National Parks recommends 4WD for the drive and plateau trail. Vehicle access can change, so check the current park alert before setting out.
