This named overlook earns its title: the serrated, peaked ridges in front of you resemble an alligator’s back, with pine-covered slopes sliding into the valley. It’s a quick, worthwhile stop along the Parkway near Doughton Park (around Milepost 242) that offers a long mountain view and a bit of natural history.

What you’ll see

From the observation deck, you get a broad mountain panorama anchored by that quirky, toothy ridgeline. On clear days the layers pop—photographers love the perspective—and interpretive panels help you read the landscape.

Wayside exhibits highlight the area’s predators and birdlife, calling out black bears, hawks, and historically, wolves. Keep an eye on the sky for raptors riding thermals; binoculars make this stop more rewarding.

This pullout doubles as a trailhead, with access to Bluff Mountain Trail and the Mountains-to-Sea Trail. A posted Doughton Park trail map on-site makes it easy to turn a quick view stop into a proper hike.

Expect auto parking, an information kiosk, and a small observation platform. That platform isn’t obvious from the lot—walk to the right of the main sign to find it. There are no restrooms, water, or picnic tables here.
