Mossy Cave

Overview

Mossy Cave is a quick, family-friendly detour on the park’s northeastern edge that delivers something Bryce rarely shows you: flowing water. The “cave” is a shallow, moss-lined grotto kept damp by steady seepage, and a short trail follows a canal-fed stream to both the grotto and a photogenic waterfall. Expect an easy stroll with about 120 feet of elevation gain and roughly a mile round trip.

What You’ll See

• A pleasant stream corridor created by the historic Tropic Ditch, with colorful hoodoos and badlands framing the water.
• Two focal points: the mossy grotto itself (an alcove you view, not enter) and Tropic Ditch Falls, a small but lovely cascade.
• In winter, the constant drip often freezes into icicles, giving the alcove an “ice cave” feel. In warmer months, the grotto stays green with moss.
• A rare riparian pocket in Bryce: alongside the creek you’ll notice moisture-loving plants that feel more “mountain brook” than high desert; over time, willows and cottonwoods are expected to establish here.

History & Geology

The water you’re walking beside is no accident. Local settlers dug the Tropic Ditch in the late 1800s to bring irrigation water to nearby communities. Here, that flow tumbles over the rim as a waterfall and supports a small, streamside ecosystem. The grotto formed where groundwater seeps out of the rock face—perfect conditions for moss in an otherwise arid landscape—while the surrounding hoodoos were sculpted by the park’s trademark frost-wedging.

Best Time to Visit

• Crowd-beating: arrive early (sunrise–9 am) or come late afternoon to evening. Midday is busiest and parking is limited.
• Seasonal highlights: spring (and after rains) for the most lively waterfall; winter for dramatic icicles; summer for cooling off by the creek, though shade is limited.
• Photography: softer light early and late helps with contrast on the red rock and water.

On the Trail

The path is straightforward and signed: one fork heads to the grotto, the other to the waterfall. Do both—each is a short detour. Surfaces can be sandy or slick near the water, and the final approaches to the grotto or viewpoints can feel steeper than the rest of the trail.

Wildlife & Plants

This stop is better for botany and geology than wildlife. You may see the usual small desert critters, but the real standout is the unexpected riparian plant community hugging the canal-fed stream.

Etiquette & Safety

Stay on the designated trail and respect any closures—the streambank plants are fragile. In winter, expect icy patches near the grotto. In summer, bring plenty of water and sun protection; there’s no potable water at the trailhead.

Good to Know

The trailhead sits along Highway 12, outside the main entrance station, so you don’t need to pass through the park gate to visit. Facilities are minimal: vault toilets and a small parking lot—plan accordingly.
