Trail guide
From Aviemore Youth Hostel car park, this route follows the signed approach beneath the A9 to the reserve entrance, traces the purple-waymarked Buzzard circuit above the Old Reservoir, then returns by the same approach: about 1.1 miles total, including access. The access path is about 0.2 mile each way; allow roughly 10 minutes each way, plus about 45 minutes for the circuit. Official trail descriptions put the circuit itself at 1.0–1.1 miles, while the traced loop measures about 0.7 mile, so the published distance and mapped line do not agree. Follow the purple markers where paths meet and treat mileage as approximate.
The circuit is rated strenuous. Expect short, steep rocky slopes and steps, a fairly steep loose-gravel pitch, and rough, narrow sections that can be overgrown or muddy. A stepping stone crosses a stream. These uneven sections make this a slow walk despite its short mapped length.
The path climbs through birch woodland to the hillside above the old reservoir, with views across Craigellachie and down Strathspey toward Meall a’ Bhuachaille. The reservoir and the waymarked junctions are the route’s clearest landmarks. Spring brings woodland flowers and birdsong; peregrines may nest on the crag, and buzzards patrol the hillside.
Day visitors may use the Aviemore Youth Hostel car park; overnight parking is not allowed. Toilets are at the hostel. Keep dogs on a short lead or under close control from 1 April through 31 July during the bird-breeding season, and follow any reserve notices.
