Parking

Park at the end of the Upper South Desert spur off Hartnet Road, 27.1 miles from Highway 24. High-clearance vehicles are required and four-wheel drive is often recommended. The southern Hartnet approach includes a Fremont River ford; wet clay, soft sand or high water can stop travel, so check conditions before setting out.

Safety

The route is unmaintained and requires backcountry route-finding skills. The final climb is steep, and the path passes a cliff-edge fissure with a serious drop; stay well back from the edge. There is no potable water in Cathedral Valley, and pets are prohibited on trails and in backcountry areas.

Hiking Upper South Desert Overlook

A short hike with a remote approachUpper South Desert Overlook is a 0.4-mile out-and-back from Hartnet Road to a rocky outcrop.

Upper South Desert Overlook is a 0.4-mile out-and-back from Hartnet Road to a rocky outcrop. The walk takes less than 30 minutes, and the effort is moderate: it starts over fairly level ground, then climbs steeply. The view is the payoff, but reaching the trailhead means a long backcountry drive, so this is best as a stop while you're already exploring Cathedral Valley. Spring and fall are the best seasons.

From the spur-road parking area, an obvious footpath heads toward the overlook. The first stretch is relatively level; the climb comes later and is steep, with no switchbacks on the final pitch. A deep fissure cuts through the cliff edge beside the route. Keep well back from it, then take your time on the rocky outcrop at the end.

The overlook opens in every direction across the upper South Desert, with steep cliffs to the north and the Henry Mountains east. On a clear day, look for Factory Butte, Acklin Peak, Thousand Lake Mountain and the distant Upper Cathedral Valley. Orange, fluted Entrada sandstone and dark volcanic dikes break up the layered desert below.

Getting there preparedThe spur leaves Hartnet Road 27.1 miles from Highway 24.

The spur leaves Hartnet Road 27.1 miles from Highway 24. Cathedral Valley roads are unpaved, require high clearance and often call for four-wheel drive; the Hartnet approach from the south also crosses the Fremont River. Wet clay, sand and high water can make the drive impassable, so check conditions before leaving. This is remote backcountry, and the route is not maintained: bring navigation skills and enough food and water. There is no potable water in Cathedral Valley, and pets aren't allowed on trails or in backcountry areas.
