Overview

About Stacker Butte Trail

Why go

  • Spring wildflowers spread across the open slopes.
  • Broad views of Mount Adams, Mount Hood and the Gorge.

Heads up

  • A sustained climb on an exposed gravel road.
  • Very limited parking at the gate.
The climb crosses treeless shrub-steppe, then opens onto views of Mount Adams and Mount Hood from the crest. In April and May, balsamroot, lupine, paintbrush, phlox and larkspur color the slopes. The Columbia Hills Natural Area Preserve protects rare plants, so stay on the road even when flowers draw you off it. A few communications structures mark the summit; frame Mount Hood above the layered ridges for the defining view.

This is a 5-mile round-trip out-and-back on a primitive gravel road from the green gate to Stacker Butte’s 3,220-foot crest. Plan about 2½–3 hours for the steady climb and return; the ascent is roughly 1,150 feet. You walk the same open road both ways, so it is easy to follow but a sustained uphill rather than a casual stroll.
