Szalay’s Farm Market and Hunt House

Overview

About Hunt House and Outdoor Exhibits

Hunt House and Outdoor Exhibits is a small historic farmhouse and visitor stop in Everett, alongside the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath. Inside, compact displays tell stories about local nature and village life; outside, photographs, recorded memories, and calf and chicken figures bring Everett's past down to a child's eye level. It's a nice short break on a Towpath outing. Come for the personal Everett story, not a big museum's range of exhibits: the appeal here is the close-up look at one family and one village.

Why stop

  • Family history comes through in photos, recorded stories, and outdoor exhibits.

Heads up

  • The historic house is small, and interior access depends on seasonal staffing.

“Szalay's Farm Market is coming up, a seasonal stop for sweet corn beside the Towpath. The family started farming here in nineteen thirty-one, and four generations have kept it going.”

More about Hunt House and Outdoor Exhibits

A farm and a familyMartha and Norman Hunt bought the property in 1867.

Martha and Norman Hunt bought the property in 1867. An earlier, larger house may have been lost to fire, and an outbuilding was adapted into the home that stands here. William and Nelle Fiedler bought the farm in 1919; William later grew and sold produce from a roadside stand. Their daughter Helyn, born in 1920, shared family photographs and memories of Everett that shape the exhibits. Listening to her recollections makes this feel less like a general pioneer display and more like a visit inside one family's life.

The barn between the house and the restroom building is a former schoolhouse that the Fiedlers moved from Botzum. It's an easy detail to miss, and a reminder that the buildings around Everett have been reused as the community changed.

Make it a Towpath stopThe house sits beside the Towpath.

The house sits beside the Towpath. Park at the Hunt House Trailhead across Bolanz Road and cross over to visit; use care at the road crossing. Restrooms stay open year-round, while the house interior opens only when staffing allows, so check the current schedule if you are coming for the exhibits. The Hunt House-to-Botzum Towpath stretch is flat, packed limestone and is described as wheelchair- and stroller-accessible. Lock 27 is about a quarter-mile north and Beaver Marsh about three-quarters of a mile south, so the house also works as a convenient pause between them.
