Szalay’s Farm & Market

Szalay’s is a family farm market in Peninsula, beside the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail. It makes a useful pause for local produce or a food break on a ride; fall visits add a corn maze and outdoor food. Sweet corn is the signature, while visitors’ opinions on the prices and the rest of the produce vary.

Three seasonal outdoor eateries serve grilled sandwiches and roasted corn, with lemonade, sweet tea, fresh-fruit sundaes, and ice cream. There’s outdoor seating, so it works as a break in the middle of a Towpath ride. Bring cash or a check: the farm lists both as accepted and has an ATM. Card acceptance isn’t clear, so don’t count on paying by card.

The three-acre corn maze is the main seasonal extra. You get a map and look for eight wooden pumpkins; allow about half an hour, with the Spinning Barn included in the experience. The maze theme changes, so check what’s on before making a special trip for it.

The farm began as a vegetable operation in 1931. It’s now a fourth-generation family farm focused on sweet corn, field-grown fruits and vegetables, and locally made goods.
