Overview

About Glyder Fach

Why stop

  • Iconic Cantilever Stone and a surreal boulder summit
  • Wide mountain views on clear days

Heads up

  • Rough, exposed terrain with scrambling on popular approaches
  • Cloud and wind can erase the views quickly
Glyder Fach is a 994-metre summit with a rough boulder plateau and one of Eryri’s most memorable mountain landmarks: the Cantilever Stone, a flat slab that appears to project into thin air. The summit feels wonderfully unlike a smooth, grassy peak. Expect angular rocks underfoot, short scrambles, and big views across the Glyderau and toward Tryfan and Yr Wyddfa when the cloud lifts.

Plan your stop

Before you go

Best time to visit

Aim for a clear, settled day and start early, especially on a weekend, for a better chance of space at Ogwen and quieter summit conditions. Spring and autumn can bring crisp light and fewer people than the main summer rush, but temperatures and visibility can change quickly. Winter conditions are for experienced walkers with appropriate winter skills and equipment. For photographs, low morning or evening light brings out the shapes in the boulder field; cloud can erase the views entirely.

Getting there

This is a mountain objective, not a drive-up viewpoint. Common approaches start in the Ogwen Valley or from the Pen-y-Gwryd and Pen-y-Pass side. Route choice matters: the popular Bristly Ridge approach is a Grade 1 scramble, while other lines still involve steep, rough ground and faint or confusing paths higher up. Study a proper map before setting out and do not treat a downloaded route as a substitute for navigation.

The Ogwen Centre is the practical base for many walks into the Glyderau. It has a small car park, a snack bar, toilets, and showers, but those facilities are at the valley base, not on the summit. Parking in Ogwen fills quickly on busy weekends and holidays, so an early start or public transport from Bethesda is sensible.

“Up ahead is Tryfan, the jagged, three-headed mountain above Llyn Ogwen. Its summit is marked by two upright rocks called Adam and Eve, but reaching them is a hands-on scramble by every route.”

More about Glyder Fach

Conditions and what to bringWeather changes fast at altitude.

Weather changes fast at altitude. Take a map and compass, charged phone, waterproof and warm layers, sturdy hiking boots, food, and enough drink for a long day. A torch, whistle, and small first-aid kit are sensible additions. The rough rocks become slippery in rain, and wind, mist, snow, or ice can turn a manageable-looking route into a serious mountain day.

The honest takeThe Cantilever Stone is a great reward for confident hill walkers who enjoy dramatic terrain,…

The Cantilever Stone is a great reward for confident hill walkers who enjoy dramatic terrain, but Glyder Fach is not a casual stop or an easy summit. If your group is unsure about scrambling, navigation, or the forecast, choose a lower-level walk in the Ogwen Valley instead.
