Apgar Campground

Apgar is Glacier National Park's largest campground, with 194 sites in paved loops through pine forest about a mile northeast of the west entrance, off U.S. 2. It works well as a base for the west side: Lake McDonald's shore is a short walk away, Apgar Village is close, and most longer hikes mean driving. The loops feel forested rather than lakeside; some individual sites have lake views, but don't count on one from your pitch.

Sites are partly shaded and spread through the trees. Conditions vary from one site to another; campers describe both screened, roomy pitches and sloping pads or tight bends, so check the details if your vehicle is long or you want easy maneuvering. Most standard sites allow up to eight people, two tents, and two vehicles where space permits. Twenty-five sites fit an RV or truck-and-trailer combination up to 40 feet. There are no electrical hookups.

Sites have a picnic table and fire ring, but the rings have no cooking grate. A seasonal camp store is on site; check what it carries before you count on it. Flush and vault toilets, showers, potable water, and the dump station operate seasonally, so check current status before relying on a particular facility. Reservations are required in spring, summer, and fall; winter camping follows different rules.

Black and grizzly bears frequent the area. Keep food, drinks, coolers, pet food, and cooking gear in a closed hard-sided vehicle or bear-proof locker whenever they aren't in immediate use. Lockers are available year-round.

Apgar's amphitheater hosts ranger evening programs. The campground also has two accessible campsites, accessible restrooms, and an accessible amphitheater.
