Best time to go
This is a summer stop, usually open from mid-June through late August. It’s volunteer-staffed, and the exact schedule and outdoor program dates vary; check the park calendar if a ranger talk is the reason you’re coming.

Touch animal pelts and build mountains in a 1929 Apgar cabin.
Overview
Apgar Nature Center is a small natural-history learning center in a 1929 log cabin among the cedars of Apgar Village. It’s a good change of pace for families between bigger park stops: there are things to handle and try, with a little cabin history alongside them. If you’re looking for a full-size museum or a major scenic view, keep expectations modest; the fun is this hands-on corner of the park.

Guide
Kids can handle pelts from grizzly bears, coyotes, beavers and mountain lions, try a bird-song guessing activity, match animals to habitats, play with puppets, and shape mountains and valleys out of kinetic sand. The outdoor seating area also hosts ranger-led talks and children’s programs about park plants, animals, history and geology on most summer days. Those are a separate bonus, and program dates vary.
The cabin dates to 1929 and originally belonged to the Greenwalt Hotel complex, where cabins were rented to guests. They had wood heat but no running water or electricity. The park acquired the land and facilities in 1956; the cabin later served for years as seasonal employee housing before becoming the nature center.
From the West Entrance, it’s about two miles into Apgar Village. The Nature Center is a separate cabin from Apgar Visitor Center. A dirt path leads from a nearby parking area to the door. Restrooms are available behind the Apgar Education Center or across from the Lake McDonald boat launch, and drinking water is available at the Education Center rather than inside the cabin.
