The village takes its name from Milo Apgar, who homesteaded near the south end of Lake McDonald with Frank Geduhn and Charlie Howe in 1892. Farming proved difficult, so Apgar turned to serving travelers with cabins, meals, pack horses, guided tours and boat trips. That’s the village’s early tourism story; the current lodge building’s own construction date isn’t established.
