Apgar Village

Apgar Village is a compact lakeside hamlet at the foot of Lake McDonald on Glacier’s west side. It’s a busy stop along Going-to-the-Sun Road, known for easy water access and a cluster of visitor services. Set aside time if you want to reach the shore, rent a boat or bike, eat, or browse the shops. If you’re after quiet, this is a busy village hub rather than a secluded stretch of lake.

Apgar’s food options include coffee, ice cream, snacks and table-service dining, alongside stores for supplies and gifts. The village also has boat and bicycle rentals and a wilderness permit office. Apgar Village Lodge & Cabins offers motel rooms and cabins along McDonald Creek, steps from the lake.

Milo Apgar arrived at Lake McDonald in the 1890s intending to farm. He and other homesteaders later found tourism a better business and began catering to visitors. The village grew into the service stop it remains today.

The foot of Lake McDonald has deep significance for Indigenous communities. Kootenai people used the lake as a place for dancing, songs and spiritual guidance; a long-standing gathering tradition at the lake’s foot ended after Milo Apgar and other settlers moved into the area.

Apgar’s Gold Brothers hotel complex included Gold’s Bungalow, an entertainment hall with dances twice a week, a soda fountain and a gift shop. The 1929 Half Moon fire destroyed much of the complex but spared the hall. Park administrators later bought it and moved it to park headquarters in 1938, where it became Glacier’s Community Building.
