How Ice Sharpens a Skyline“Picture two glaciers carving opposite sides of the same mountain ridge. As they wear away the rock, the crest between them becomes narrow and sharp. Geologists call that ridge an arête. The Garden Wall is one example.”

Guide
West Entrance Station is the vehicle entry and fee checkpoint on Going-to-the-Sun Road at Glacier's west entrance. The entry fee is due even when the booth is unstaffed; follow the posted self-payment instructions. This is a working gate, rather than a separate visitor-center stop.
Civilian Conservation Corps crews completed the one-story station in August 1941. Its wood frame is faced with native stone, and a broad log-framed gable roof reaches over the vehicle lanes. The rustic design was meant to recall a roadside toll station.
As traffic grew, two checking cubicles were added beneath the roof's wings in 1963. They let two lanes pass through at once and made room for larger recreational vehicles. The building still serves as an entrance checkpoint.
