Hiking Rocky Point Nature Trail

What the route isRocky Point Nature Trail is about a 1.8-mile lollipop loop on Lake McDonald’s west shore.

Rocky Point Nature Trail is about a 1.8-mile lollipop loop on Lake McDonald’s west shore. From the signed trailhead across from the Inside North Fork Road pullout, it follows the Lake McDonald Trail through forest, circles Rocky Point, and returns to the same access. It’s a good short walk when you want a real shoreline stop as part of the hike. Allow about one to one and a half hours with time at the views.

Cross Fern Creek on its footbridge and stay left where the path branches toward Fish Creek Campground. At the loop junction, turn right to go counterclockwise. A short spur reaches the west shore; at the Lake McDonald Trail junction, keep left to close the loop. The brief climb at Rocky Point and the steep descent back toward the approach are the hardest parts.

Published distances conflict: the park hiking list gives 1.1 miles one-way, while another route description gives 1.9 miles round-trip. The connected mapped route from the roadside trailhead is about 1.8 miles; starting from the campground uses a different approach. The access road is gravel. Pets aren’t allowed on park trails.

The approach crosses a firebreak where older forest stands beside land burned in the 2003 Robert Fire. The fire burned nearly 40,000 acres along Lake McDonald. Look for young Douglas-fir, lodgepole pine, western larch, and ponderosa pine among the gray snags. Huckleberries are reported in midsummer, with orange and purple foliage in fall.

The southern side opens onto rocky shoreline with views down Lake McDonald toward Apgar and up-lake toward the Glacier peaks near Sperry Glacier. A short side path reaches the water. The angular rocks make a useful foreground if you want the lake and mountains to read clearly in a photo.

The north sideThe northern side gives more lake views and looks toward Howe Ridge through fire-killed snags.

The northern side gives more lake views and looks toward Howe Ridge through fire-killed snags. Young lodgepole pine gradually closes the view before the route turns back through aspens, larches, and lodgepole. The shaded Fern Creek crossing is a good place to slow down and look for birds.
