Overview
A classic 36-room, mid-century motor inn set directly on the shore of Lake McDonald, about two miles inside the West Entrance. Opened in 1956 and refreshed in 2015, it’s simple by design but big on setting—every room faces the lake and the peaks beyond. It typically operates seasonally from mid-May to early October.
Rooms & Layout
Pick from standard motel rooms, multi-room family units (sleeping 5–6 on the second floor), and a handful of first-floor rooms with full kitchens/kitchenettes. All rooms have private bathrooms and lake views. Expect the basics in-room (coffee maker, hair dryer, iron/board, alarm clock); there are no TVs, no air conditioning, and no in-room telephones, though fans are available on request. Second-floor rooms are accessed by stairs only.
Kitchens & Nearby Food
Kitchen units include basic utensils plus a refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, and stove/oven. Cooking is only permitted in those kitchen units. There’s free parking behind the inn and you’re a short walk from Apgar Village for convenience items and dining at Eddie’s Cafe.
Setting & Things To Do
This is pure lake life: step outside to Adirondack chairs for sunsets, stargazing, and morning calm. Swim from the nearby beaches, or grab boat and bike rentals close by to explore the shoreline and village area. The views from your porch or balcony are the star—many guests spend as much time soaking them in as they do exploring.
Getting Around
It’s an easy walk (roughly 15 minutes) to the Apgar Visitor Center and the park shuttle hub, making this a handy base when Going-to-the-Sun Road and the shuttle are operating. Overnight guests don’t need a vehicle reservation to access the lodge/Apgar area, but a reservation is required to drive beyond the west entrance checkpoint during enforcement periods.
Policies & Practicalities
- Seasonal operation (mid-May to early October)
- Free self-parking behind the inn
- Service animals allowed; pets otherwise not permitted
- Check-in typically around 4 PM; check-out around 11 AM
- Wi‑Fi is satellite-based, lobby-only, and very limited; cell service is usually unavailable
Best Time to Visit
Sunrise brings glassy reflections on Lake McDonald, while late afternoon through sunset delivers the best golden light on the peaks. Weekdays feel a touch quieter. If you want a kitchen unit or ground-floor access, book as far ahead as you can—peak summer dates sell out fast.
