Set on the west shore of Lake McDonald a few miles from the West Entrance, Fish Creek Picnic Area is a low‑key, lakeside day‑use spot beside Fish Creek Campground. The draw is simple and good: table‑side picnics, quick access to the water, and big views across Lake McDonald with peaks lining the horizon.

What You'll See

Expect a small sandy/pebble beach used for wading and swimming, plus plenty of picnic tables tucked among the trees. Visitors call out clear water, clean grounds, and wide‑open lake-and-mountain vistas. It’s also a handy place to upload a photo or check trail conditions thanks to unusually strong service here.

Amenities and Nearby

There are bathrooms at the picnic area, and the adjacent campground has restrooms with flush toilets and running water. Parking is straightforward. From here, you’re well placed for short outings: Rocky Point (about 1.1 miles, minimal gain) delivers quick lake overlooks through a burn area, and the Lake McDonald West Shore Trail offers mellow forested walking. A short bike path segment also starts near Camas Road. In summer, ranger programs run at the Fish Creek amphitheater next door.

Wildlife and Safety

This is bear country. Keep all food and scented items secured when not in immediate use; bear lockers are near campground restrooms. Pack out trash promptly and leave tables clean.

Best Times to Visit

• Early morning: calm water and soft side‑light on the peaks make for tranquil picnics and photos.
• Midday: if you’re planning to swim, this is when the surface warms—just know the lake stays chilly.
• Late day/sunset: warm light across Lake McDonald can be gorgeous from this shoreline. Clear nights can reward astrophotographers.

Crowds ebb and flow, but this spot often feels calmer than the park’s headline stops; arrive earlier in the day or later in the afternoon for the easiest parking.

Logistics

Fish Creek is about four miles from the West Entrance off Camas Road. During the park’s reservation season, a separate vehicle reservation is required for this west‑side area; a camping reservation alone doesn’t grant access. For supplies or a treat, Apgar Village is a short drive or bike ride away.
