“You're nearing Two Medicine's North Shore Trailhead, where Twin Falls makes a gentle but fairly long waterfall walk. Allow about four hours for seven miles round trip to the two cascades below Pumpelly Pillar.”

Hiking Oldman Lake Trail

A full-day lake walkOldman Lake is a 12.

Oldman Lake is a 12.8-mile out-and-back from North Shore Trailhead, climbing about 1,500 feet over 6.4 miles each way. Plan roughly 6.5–7 hours for the long approach and return. The route follows the Pitamakan Pass trail into a broad valley, then turns west to the lake below Mount Morgan. The mapped hike ends at the lake; it does not include the steeper climb to Pitamakan Pass.

From Two Medicine Campground, cross the footbridge and take the right branch toward Pitamakan Pass. The trail skirts Pray Lake and the east side of Rising Wolf Mountain. Around 2.3 miles in, cross Dry Fork Creek; about 0.2 mile later, take the left branch at the Dry Fork junction toward Oldman Lake. The right branch descends toward the Two Medicine Entrance Station.

Beyond Dry Fork, the route heads west through a broad valley, alternating meadows, pine woods and small aspen groves. An open meadow around mile 4.2 brings views of Flinsch Peak and Mount Morgan. For several miles, the landscape also shows the lasting effects of the 1925 Dry Fork Fire.

Near mile 6.3, turn left onto the Oldman Lake path. The four-site backcountry campground lies shortly before the lake, which sits below Mount Morgan; Flinsch Peak rises to the left and Pitamakan Pass is to the north. The shoreline is the route’s signature view: frame the water with the peaks for the reflection. A further climb to Pitamakan Pass is about 1.4 miles one way and gains more than 750 feet; it is an optional extension, outside the mapped distance.
