Hiking Red Rocks to Anglesea Walk

The Red Rocks stageRed Rocks to Anglesea is a 5.

Red Rocks to Anglesea is a 5.1 km one-way walk on the Surf Coast Walk, following the cliff-top track from Red Rocks to Anglesea Beachfront Family Caravan Park. Allow about 1½–2 hours for the walk; the route climbs about 100 metres and includes rocky steps. An older published figure gives 3.5 km, while the detailed mapped line and another route measurement support 5.1–5.2 km. Plan for the longer distance and follow current trail markers. This record covers the Red Rocks stage, not the separate beach approach from Point Addis.

From the beach to the cliffsThe route begins at Red Rocks, where steps climb from the beach onto the cliff top.

The route begins at Red Rocks, where steps climb from the beach onto the cliff top. From there a well-formed track crosses low coastal heath toward Anglesea. A rocky step section about halfway makes the route slower than the smooth path suggests. The coast opens out to surf and ochre cliffs; keep to the marked track through the cliff-top sections.

Heath and ocean viewsThe track crosses wind-shaped heath and low coastal forest.

The track crosses wind-shaped heath and low coastal forest. The wider Anglesea Heath is known for a rich wildflower flora, including more than a hundred native orchid species, with spring the main flowering season. Birdlife and reptiles have been reported along the walk, though sightings vary. At the ocean view near Inverlochy, keep some heath in the foreground to show how the scrub meets the coast.

Hurst Road Carpark is an access to the Red Rocks end; reaching the Red Rocks start involves a beach walk before the steps. The mapped stage finishes beside Anglesea Beachfront Family Caravan Park, so arrange a pickup or plan to retrace the route. Cafés are in Anglesea near the river, away from the track. No toilet or water facility was confirmed at the Red Rocks access, so carry water and use town facilities before setting out. Dogs are allowed on lead along this section.
