Parking

Start at the Middle Prong Trailhead at the end of Tremont Road. The Greenbrier Ridge junction is about 4.1 trail miles up Middle Prong; the route ends on the Appalachian Trail. Neither endpoint has direct road access, so plan a long return or onward backcountry route.

Safety

The Indian Flats Prong crossings require rock-hopping and may be unsafe in high water. This is a remote backcountry connector with no road access at either end; plan the return or onward route before starting.

Hiking Greenbrier Ridge Trail

What this route actually takesGreenbrier Ridge Trail is a 4.

Greenbrier Ridge Trail is a 4.2-mile, one-way point-to-point connector from Middle Prong Trail to the Appalachian Trail near Sam’s Gap. Allow about 3.5 hours for this segment; it climbs roughly 1,600 feet through streamside forest and onto the ridge. This is a backcountry route, not a roadside hike: the north junction is about 4.1 trail miles up Middle Prong from the end of Tremont Road, and the south end meets the Appalachian Trail with no direct road access. Plan your onward route or return before starting. Retracing both trails to the road-end makes a hike of about 16.6 miles.

The named trail starts on an old railroad grade over Mellinger Death Ridge, then rock-hops Indian Flats Prong and climbs beside the water before turning into a narrow forest path. There are two stream crossings; high water can make them difficult, so don't set out if you cannot cross safely. The climb is steady: a past field account put about 1,300 feet of ascent in the first 2.7 miles and another 300 feet in the last 1.5.

Views and spring growthA view toward Blanket Mountain appears about a mile along the route.

A view toward Blanket Mountain appears about a mile along the route. The stream drops away within the first mile, and the trail continues through forest before opening to higher mountain views near Sam’s Gap, including Thunderhead Mountain. Spring is the best-supported season for flowers: smooth hydrangea, broadleaf waterleaf, bee balm, woodland bluets and mountain laurel have all been recorded along the route, alongside patches of common greenbrier.
