Lane Cove Campground

Overview

Lane Cove Campground is a remote, hike-in backcountry spot tucked along the north shore at Lane Cove. With only five tent sites right near the water, it’s loved by backpackers looking for a quieter, scenic alternative to the busier campgrounds.

What to Expect

Expect big lake views and a peaceful vibe. Sunrises and sunsets over Lake Superior can be spectacular, and clear nights bring excellent stargazing. You’ll likely hear loons calling across the cove, and sightings of moose, foxes, and a variety of birds are reported. The weather off Superior can flip quickly—come ready for wind, rain, and temperature swings.

Getting There

Access is by foot via the Lane Cove Trail from the Greenstone Ridge Trail. It’s roughly 6.9 miles from Rock Harbor with a stout climb over the ridge—beautiful, but it’ll make you earn your shoreline camp.

Campsites and Facilities

There are five tent sites, spaced for privacy, and most can fit 2–3 tents. Facilities are intentionally minimal: outhouse-style toilets, but no potable water, no showers, and no picnic tables. You’ll filter or treat lake water, pack out your trash, and cook on a stove—campfires aren’t allowed.

Vibe and Crowds

Even though it’s out of the way, it can fill during peak summer. Site sharing does happen when needed, but the atmosphere tends to stay courteous and low-key.

Regulations and Limits

Between June 1 and September 17 there’s a one-night stay limit here to spread the love. No pets and no fires. Use the toilets provided and follow Leave No Trace.

Best Time to Visit

Midweek during the shoulder parts of summer typically sees fewer people. Arrive earlier in the day to snag a site. For photos, shoot sunset over the cove; mornings are calmer for glassy water shots. Clear, moonless nights are best for stargazing.
