Lane Cove Campground

Lane Cove Campground is a five-site primitive tent campground on Isle Royale's north shore, beside Lake Superior. Go for an isolated overnight by the water; it is a backcountry destination, not a roadside stop. Hikers reach it from Lane Cove Trail off Greenstone Ridge, and canoeists and kayakers can also arrive. From Rock Harbor, the hiking routes are roughly six to seven miles one way depending on the route, with a steep descent from the ridge.

Small-party overnight permits are free, but required, and the tent sites are first-come, first-served. The campground has a seasonal composting toilet, a water source that is not potable, and a food-storage locker. Treat water before drinking and bring your food: there is no store, food service, road access, or cell reception at camp. During June 1 through September 21, the stay limit is one night. Have a backup plan if you are hiking in; only five sites are listed.

The reward is a quiet cove on the lake, with the shoreline and open water close to camp. Visitors repeatedly single out the sunsets over Lake Superior and the sense of remoteness. The last stretch from the ridge drops through woods and can cross wet, uneven ground, so allow time for the climb back out and carry what you need for an overnight.
