Big Meadow Campground is a developed Forest Service campground at about 7,500 feet, in the meadow and pine country on the road between Grant Grove and Lodgepole. It sits on Sequoia National Forest land outside Kings Canyon National Park, though its approach follows the park corridor. Keep it in mind for a basic overnight base near Big Meadows Creek and Jennie Lakes Wilderness; the high-country setting and easy access to nearby outdoor activities are the draw.

The sites are split into several units along Big Meadows Road, not one tight loop, so check your assigned unit and site number before leaving the main road. Some campers say the spread-out layout can be confusing. Sites have a picnic table, metal fire ring and food-storage box, with vault toilets; they are nonelectric. There is no potable water, so bring what you'll need. Mosquitoes come up repeatedly in reports, especially near the creek and toward evening, so repellent is useful. A California campfire permit is required for campfires, barbecues and camp stoves; check current fire restrictions before lighting one.

An open meadow and creek run through this high-elevation landscape, ringed by lodgepole pine, Jeffrey pine and red fir, with granite mountains nearby. Fly-fishing in Big Meadows Creek and hiking into Jennie Lakes Wilderness are the main nearby activities. Buck Rock Lookout is a short drive away, and Hume Lake is about 15 miles from camp.

Turn onto Big Meadows Road (Forest Road 14S11) from General's Highway and follow it roughly five miles to the campground. The forest road can close in winter when it is snowy or muddy, and the campground operates seasonally, so check current access and operating dates before driving out.
