Before you go

Parking

Start at the Buttermere National Trust car park in the village, near postcode CA13 9UZ and grid reference NY172172. Follow signs through the village and around the front of Buttermere Court Hotel to the lake path. The walk ends at Gatesgarth Farm, so arrange a second vehicle, pickup, or public transport if you are not walking back. Avoid roadside verges or laybys where a farm vehicle or emergency vehicle could be blocked.

Best time to go

This is moderate for an otherwise low-level lakeshore walk: the distance is manageable, but the route is not a smooth promenade. Allow about 1.5 hours one way at a steady sightseeing pace, and closer to 3 hours if walking back. Calm mornings and late-day light are especially good for water reflections; Burtness Wood provides some shelter and shade.

Safety

The longer section has large stones, a short slope of about 1:8, and a short steep stone culvert with slopes up to about 1:4. The final section is rough and narrows to roughly 900 mm. Watch the gates and footbridges, and keep dogs on a short lead around livestock and ground-nesting wildlife.

Hiking Buttermere Lakeshore

Route and distanceThis is a 2.33-mile (3.

This is a 2.33-mile (3.75 km) point-to-point walk one way, from Buttermere village to Gatesgarth Farm. Walk back for 4.65 miles (7.5 km) total, or arrange a pickup or use the 77 or 77A bus from the far end. The first 0.47 mile (750 m) is the easier section; this entry follows the longer route for more capable walkers.

Walk experienceStart beside Buttermere Court Hotel and follow the signed bridleway to the lake.

Start beside Buttermere Court Hotel and follow the signed bridleway to the lake. The first section leads to a footbridge with views across Buttermere toward Fleetwith Pike and Haystacks. Beyond the turning point, cross the footbridges into Burtness Wood, where large stones and modest undulations make the surface less forgiving. The path hugs the water for a while, then climbs slightly away from the shore for views toward Robinson, Hindscarth, and Dale Head. It finishes on rough but mostly level ground at the Scarth Gap path junction, through a gate and across Peggie's Bridge to Gatesgarth Farm.

Access and petsThe opening 750 m is the most accessible part.

The opening 750 m is the most accessible part. The longer route has uneven stones, a short gradient, and a narrow finish, so it is not suitable for every wheelchair or mobility aid. Mobility scooters on the route must be class 2 or 3. Dogs are welcome, but keep them on a short lead around livestock and wildlife and follow local signs.

If you want a complete loop and do not need the point-to-point layout, Buttermere Circular is the more satisfying single outing. This route is the better fit when a one-way walk, accessible first section, or bus return matters.
