Parking

Use the National Trust Buttermere village car park, CA13 9UZ, about 300 yards outside the hamlet toward Cockermouth, then walk to the Bridge Hotel start. An LDNPA car park is in the village behind the Bridge Hotel. Parking fills early on busy summer weekends.

Safety

The climb is steep and sustained, with slippery stone steps. The upper approach becomes rough and boggy, crosses a small stream and has little shelter. Mountain weather can change quickly above the woodland. Keep dogs under close control around livestock and wildlife.

Hiking Bleaberry Tarn above Buttermere

RouteThis is a 3.1-mile (5.

This is a 3.1-mile (5.0 km) out-and-back from Buttermere village, with the return counted in the distance. The map draws the physical corridor once from the Bridge Hotel area to the tarn because the same path is retraced. Allow about two hours at a normal sightseeing pace.

From beside the Bridge Hotel, take the lane toward the lake, pass through the field gates and follow the shore path to the footbridge. Cross Buttermere Dubs, then continue up the steep stone-pitched path beside Sourmilk Gill. The route climbs through Burtness Wood, passes a gate onto open fell, and zigzags beside the upper gill before crossing rough ground and a small stream to reach the tarn. Return the same way.

What you getThis is a short route with a serious climb, not a flat tarn stroll.

This is a short route with a serious climb, not a flat tarn stroll. The lower path is clear and well built, but the ascent is long and relentless. Above the trees the views open over Buttermere and Crummock Water, with the surrounding fells filling the background. Bleaberry Tarn is the payoff: a quiet mountain pool beneath the rugged ridge of Red Pike and High Stile, with a glacial corrie feel and a good place to pause before descending.

Effort and footingExpect roughly 406 m of ascent on steep steps, rock and pitched stone.

Expect roughly 406 m of ascent on steep steps, rock and pitched stone. The upper path is rougher and can be muddy or boggy near the tarn, and small streams may cross the line after wet weather. The route is established rather than technical, but wet rocks are slippery and the effort is concentrated into a short distance. There is little shelter once you leave the woodland, so clear weather makes a big difference to the views.

Practical detailsThe National Trust welcomes dogs in the valley, but keep them under close control around…

The National Trust welcomes dogs in the valley, but keep them under close control around livestock and wildlife. There are toilets, pubs and cafés in Buttermere, but no facilities on the climb. If you want a much easier and more accessible outing, the level Buttermere lakeshore walk is the better choice; choose this one for the steep climb and the high tarn rather than convenience.
