Parking

Use the visitor car park at Lowther Castle, where this loop starts and finishes. Toilets and refreshments are available at the castle visitor site, and Askham provides a mid-route village stop. Limited bus service reaches Lowther Castle.

Safety

Askham Fell is exposed, with little shelter and paths that can become muddy or slippery. Keep dogs close around the estate's cattle and other livestock, obey signs marking private land, and take care on the short road sections through the villages. Do not rely on finding water along the route.

“For a gentler break on foot around Askham, I'd choose the riverside path from Askham Bridge. Start at the car park on the Lowther side of the bridge and follow the sign toward Eamont Bridge.”

Hiking Lowther Loop

The routeThis is a 7.

This is a 7.5-mile circular walk from Lowther Castle, with the stored distance covering the complete loop rather than a one-way leg. From the castle access, the waymarked route drops through estate parkland and woodland to the River Lowther, crosses Crookwath Bridge, and continues through meadows and village lanes toward Helton and Askham. It then climbs onto open Askham Fell, passing the prehistoric Cop Stone, before descending through Askham and returning through woodland to Lowther Castle.

What it feels likeThe variety is the point: castle ruins and designed parkland give way to a quiet river…

The variety is the point: castle ruins and designed parkland give way to a quiet river corridor, pastoral fields, a small village, and open fell views toward Ullswater and the Helvellyn range. The route uses tracks, bridleways, footpaths, gates, slopes, and short road sections. It is moderate rather than technical, but it is a proper half-day country walk and not a smooth castle-garden stroll. Allow about 3.5 to 4.5 hours with ordinary stops.

The tradeoffsAskham Fell is the most exposed part of the walk, and paths can be muddy, uneven, or slippery…

Askham Fell is the most exposed part of the walk, and paths can be muddy, uneven, or slippery after wet weather. The open sections have little shelter. This is not an accessible route because of uneven field paths, gates, slopes, and fell ground. The Cop Stone and wide fell views reward the extra distance, while the shorter castle-garden walks are a better choice if you want level paths and a quick outing.

PracticalitiesDogs are allowed, but keep them on a lead around livestock and follow estate signs wherever…

Dogs are allowed, but keep them on a lead around livestock and follow estate signs wherever animals are present. The estate has free-roaming cattle, and some land is marked private. Lowther Castle has toilets, refreshments, and parking at the start and finish; Askham has a shop and village places to stop. The route is best in settled daylight, with early or late light especially good for the river, castle, and fell views. Carry water and a map or GPX because the scenery changes quickly and the route includes open ground.
