Parking

Use the small Cow Bridge car park beside the A592 at the north end of Brothers Water, between Hartsop and Patterdale. It has roughly 22 spaces, so it fills more readily than its rural setting suggests. The walk starts by Cow Bridge; do not use a summit or destination listing as the trailhead.

Best time to go

Allow about 4 hours 45 minutes to 5 hours 30 minutes at an ordinary walking pace with summit stops. Clear spring through autumn days give the best chance of open views. The tops can be cold, wet, icy, or snow-covered outside summer, while shoulder seasons are often quieter but muddier. Start early for a better chance of quiet paths and softer light on the ridges. There is no meaningful short version that preserves the whole circuit, so turn back if the upper weather is deteriorating.

Safety

This is exposed upland terrain with steep rocky and boggy sections, limited shelter, and no dependable facilities once you leave the valley. Cloud can erase the ridge line. Take particular care with route-finding around Bakestones Moss and on the steep descent from High Hartsop Dodd. Keep dogs close around livestock and follow the 2-metre lead rule on open access land from 1 March to 31 July.

Hiking The Dovedale Round

Route and payoffThis is a 7.2-mile (11.

This is a 7.2-mile (11.6 km) circular walk from Cow Bridge, with the stored distance covering the complete loop. The route climbs to Hartsop Above How, continues over Hart Crag and Dove Crag, then returns over Little Hart Crag and High Hartsop Dodd. That is five named Wainwright summits in one circuit, with broad views into Dovedale, across Brothers Water, and over the eastern fells. Expect roughly 829 metres of ascent.

What it feels likeThe mileage is modest, but this is a hard fell walk, not a casual valley stroll.

The mileage is modest, but this is a hard fell walk, not a casual valley stroll. Expect a sustained climb from Cow Bridge, rocky and grassy high-level paths, boggy patches, and steep ground on the descent from High Hartsop Dodd. The ridge sections are the payoff: the route keeps changing angle and outlook, and the crags around Dove Crag give the walk more character than a simple summit out-and-back. Navigation is generally straightforward in clear weather, but the line around Bakestones Moss and the steep final descent deserve attention in cloud or poor visibility.

Dogs and accessDogs may use the route, but it crosses open fell and livestock country with steep, rough ground.

Dogs may use the route, but it crosses open fell and livestock country with steep, rough ground. Keep them close and under control. On open access land, a lead no longer than 2 metres is required from 1 March to 31 July to protect ground-nesting birds. This is a public-access mountain route, not a managed surfaced trail, so sturdy footwear and basic mountain navigation are appropriate.
