Before you go

Parking

Start at Raspberry Creek car park, about 54 km west of Wānaka on the Wānaka–Mount Aspiring Road. The final 30 km are gravel, with several fords in the last 10 km. After heavy rain they may be impassable. If needed, park safely before the final two fords and walk the remaining few hundred metres. Check current access notices before driving in.

Safety

Advanced tramping terrain. The climb above Pearl Flat has steep, often slippery ground and an exposed rock slab beside a serious drop; wet or icy conditions make it treacherous. The shared approach crosses avalanche terrain, usually most concerning from May to November, though snow on steep slopes can be hazardous at any time. Avalanche debris can reach Shovel Flat; do not camp there.

“You're approaching Raspberry Creek car park, the start of the Rob Roy Glacier walk. For hanging glacier ice and waterfalls dropping from high cliffs, this is a walk I'd choose.”

Hiking Liverpool Track

Is this the right overnight hike?Liverpool Track is a 30 km out-and-back from Raspberry Creek car park to Liverpool Hut, 15 km…

Liverpool Track is a 30 km out-and-back from Raspberry Creek car park to Liverpool Hut, 15 km each way via Aspiring Hut and Pearl Flat. The one-way walk takes about 6 hours 30 minutes, so a full return means roughly 13 hours on foot before stops; plan to stay overnight. You start on open valley flats and finish with a steep, exposed alpine climb above the bushline. The reward is the hut’s high perch over Matukituki Valley toward Mount Aspiring/Tititea. This suits fit, experienced trampers. If the final climb sounds like too much, Aspiring Hut makes an easier overnight turnaround on the same approach.

The first 9 km to Aspiring Hut take about 2 to 2½ hours across grassy flats, with a couple of small bluffs opening views up the valley. The lower approach crosses private farmland, so stay on the marked track. Near Aspiring Hut the route enters bush and crosses Cascade Creek by bridge; after a short forest stretch, a terrace opens at Shovel Flat. It is another 5 km and about 1½ hours to Pearl Flat. The head of Shovel Flat is eroded. Follow the orange poles toward the bush instead of the riverbank, then continue to the signed Liverpool Track turnoff.

At Pearl Flat, leave West Matukituki Track and cross the Liverpool Stream swing bridge. The last kilometre is short on paper, not in effort: the route climbs steeply through often slippery bush to the bushline, then crosses exposed shingle, rock and tussock. A rock slab beside a steep drop is especially dangerous when wet or icy. Above it, follow the poles left up an easier tussock slope to the knoll above the hut. When the hut first comes into view, keep to the marked route over the knoll. Do not sidle down the steep slope toward it. There is no track onward from Liverpool Hut.

Stay for the hut and the viewLiverpool Hut is a 10-bunk serviced alpine hut with mattresses and a non-flush toilet.

Liverpool Hut is a 10-bunk serviced alpine hut with mattresses and a non-flush toilet. Book ahead in summer. Its tap water is untreated and must be boiled. There are no lights, fire or heater, so bring a sleeping bag, stove, fuel, cooking gear, food and toilet paper. The knoll above the hut is the place to pause: it opens the view back over the valley toward Mount Aspiring/Tititea, the defining payoff after the climb.

Choose a dry-weather windowDOC recommends this track in dry summer and early autumn conditions.

DOC recommends this track in dry summer and early autumn conditions. Rain, ice and snow make the upper track more slippery, and the alpine weather can change quickly. The shared approach passes through complex avalanche terrain between Rough Creek and the Liverpool Track junction, usually a concern from May to November; avalanches remain possible whenever steep slopes hold snow. Debris can reach Shovel Flat, so do not camp there. Snow and ice can reach the bushline outside midwinter, and the upper section may require mountaineering skills and equipment.
