“The fish in Rainier's lakes have a human history. These lakes were naturally fishless, even though native fish lived in the park's rivers.”

Eagle Cliff is a named viewpoint on the Spray Park Trail above Mowich Lake, about 1.5 trail miles from the campground trailhead. On clear days it's the route's first major view of Mount Rainier and Mowich Glacier. I'd make the detour if you're already hiking toward Spray Park; as a destination by itself, it takes roughly a three-mile round trip to reach and return.

From Mowich Lake's walk-in campground, the route follows the Wonderland Trail for about a quarter mile, then leaves it for Spray Park Trail. The path rolls through forest and crosses Lee Creek; a short side path drops to Eagle Cliff before the main trail continues toward Eagle's Roost and Spray Falls. The campground by the trailhead has a privy and picnic tables. Beyond its first three miles, Mowich Lake Road is unpaved and can be rough; the area is generally open from mid-July to mid-October. Check current NPS road and trail conditions before setting out.

Rainier and Mowich GlacierThe payoff is the clear-day view of Rainier with Mowich Glacier across its upper slopes.

The payoff is the clear-day view of Rainier with Mowich Glacier across its upper slopes. Frame both together for the classic Eagle Cliff view; this is the first big mountain reveal on the route, not a roadside overlook.
