Mowich Lake Campground

Mowich Lake Campground is a rustic, tent-only walk-in camp in Mount Rainier’s northwest corner, near Mowich Lake’s parking area at 4,929 feet. Its 13 primitive tent pads put two substantial hikes close at hand: Spray Park and Tolmie Peak. Choose it for the trails and high-country lake setting; the camp is small and open, so the pads feel more communal than secluded.

Overnight stays require a wilderness permit. The area has seasonal vault toilets without sinks or running water, but no potable water or food service; bring all food and water and use the animal-safe food lockers. The walk-in pads have picnic tables, and fires are prohibited. The gravel parking area has two standard accessible spaces; the vault toilets are not marked accessible. Mowich Lake Road is normally a summer road, typically open from mid-July to mid-October. Check current access conditions before planning; that seasonal window is only a usual pattern.

Spray Park Trail starts southeast of the campground and makes a six-mile round trip. About two miles in, a spur leads to Spray Falls; the main trail then climbs into subalpine meadows. Tolmie Peak Trail starts on the north side of Mowich Lake and runs 6.5 miles round trip to a historic fire lookout. These are substantial hikes, not short campsite strolls, so check trail conditions before setting out.

Mowich Lake sits in a glacial basin ringed by fragile subalpine meadows; it is Mount Rainier National Park’s largest and deepest lake. The road to the lake was completed in 1933. Before it, visitors reached this corner by rail to Wilkeson, then by horse and later car up the Carbon River. The idea of a road looping around the mountain ended after 1934 because the west-side slopes were steep and hazardous.
