Hiking Dalton Trail

What this walk isDalton Trail is a 6.4-mile one-way route through the Arrowhead trail network.

Dalton Trail is a 6.4-mile one-way route through the Arrowhead trail network. It starts at Point N, follows a ridge toward Point M, drops through a rhododendron tunnel, then winds through switchbacks toward Point L. Allow about three to four hours for the one-way hike, with more time for stops. The listed distance is one way, so plan how you will reach the start and return from the finish before setting out.

The tread is only about 20 to 24 inches wide, with tight turns, mildly steep hills, small obstacles and rocky patches. It is designated for hiking and biking, so expect to share the narrow corners with other trail users. This is an intermediate route through rolling ground, not one of Arrowhead's easy green loops.

What you passThe route moves from a ridge into the rhododendron tunnel, then across a switchback stretch.

The route moves from a ridge into the rhododendron tunnel, then across a switchback stretch. Near the north side of Craig Branch, it passes older forest and offers occasional glimpses into the gorge through the trees. Those are brief peeks rather than a wide-open overlook; the changing woods and winding tread are the draw.

Access and the Arrowhead storyUse the Arrowhead Trail trailhead parking area.
