Golden West Visitor Center

Overview

Tucked just uphill from Stehekin Landing at the north end of Lake Chelan, the Golden West Visitor Center is the welcome mat for the remote Stehekin valley. There’s no road access to Stehekin, so this center serves travelers who arrive by passenger ferry, floatplane, or trail. Note: it remains closed for the current season; check the park’s hours page before planning on going inside.

What’s Inside (when open)

• Information desk and bookstore with maps and books
• A large relief map plus exhibits on the area’s natural and cultural history
• Short audiovisual program and summer ranger programs
• The Golden West Gallery, showcasing local artists and craftspeople
• Indoor restrooms

Access and Essentials

It’s a short walk from the ferry dock to the building. Stehekin is remote: expect no cell service, limited groceries/food in summer (and none in the off-season), and no ATMs; pack in what you need and pack out trash. If the center is closed, look for information on bulletin boards around Stehekin and outdoor interpretive panels. Core services like campgrounds and restrooms are still maintained, and emergency/fire staff cover the area as needed.

If You Need In‑Person Help Elsewhere

For trip planning and permits, use the North Cascades Visitor Center near Newhalem or the Wilderness Information Center in Marblemount when you’re on the road‑accessible side of the park.

Best Time to Visit

Plan for the summer season when the building is typically staffed and open; verify current hours before you go. Align your visit with ferry arrival/departure times so you have enough time to explore the exhibits and gallery when it’s open.
