Trail guide
An out-and-back walk of 2.0 km (1.24 miles) round trip, about 0.60 miles each way along the same corridor, with roughly 45 minutes walking time. Ascent and descent are about 12 m each, between a low point of 347 m and a high point of 359 m. The official summary rounds the walk to about 1.5 miles, but the detailed measurement is 2.003 km, quoted here as the full there-and-back total.
From the access point where the Kepwick road meets the Hambleton Drove Road, follow the Cleveland Way north on a wide, close-cropped grass and stony track that descends gently. At the site of Lime Kiln House, turn right onto a short-turf grass bridleway that climbs at about 1:15 before levelling out. Beyond a bridlegate the path narrows and gets rougher for a short stretch, then reaches the Thorodale viewpoint. Return the same way.
This is graded Miles without Stiles (For many), intended for assisted wheelchair users and more robust all-terrain buggies. It is a guide rather than a guarantee, and it is not universally accessible. Maximum gradients are 1:15 down and up, surfaces are natural grass and stone rather than sealed, and the final section before the viewpoint is narrower and rougher than the rest.
The access road up from Kepwick is steep, narrow, gated tarmac, and cars may continue to the point where it meets the Drove Road. There is only space for a few cars there. No facilities exist at the start; the nearest accessible toilets are in Thirsk and Osmotherley.
The Hambleton Drove Road is an ancient route used by Scottish cattle drovers heading south. Prehistoric flints, axes and pottery have been found along it. Lime Kiln House was an old drovers' inn, and local limestone was worked here for lime and building stone.
Ordinary dogs may use the public rights of way here. In moorland areas they must stay on the rights of way and be kept on a lead or to heel, and under close control around livestock and wildlife.
It is short, retraces its own steps, and the parking pinch point plus the steep approach road can put people off. If you want a fuller day and more varied ground, the longer Cleveland Way sections or wider Hambleton Hills walks suit better. This route is the right pick when the aim is a brief, low-effort outing to a good view.
